| the following statement is from the apostle paul's letter to the colossian church.
(if you want to know exactly where, it is what we modern-day christians
would know as "chapter 3, verse 16," even though we all know that the
chapter-and-verse part of the bible is an added human invention,
because the books of the bible had no chapter-and-verse markings at the
time of their writing. guess we were just too nitpicky to leave
the bible as God inspired it, eh?)
"let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish
one another with all wisdom, as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual
songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."
now, before i ask my question, let me set up these parameters:
- the "in your hearts" part obviously refers to the gratitude, not the psalms/hymns/spiritual songs
- this means that women are to be teaching; after all, women sing,
right? and this clearly states that we sing to teach,
right? right. glad we got that settled, i might bring that
up in a later post.
- by "psalms," it is safe to assume that, since they had the old
testament as their scripture, paul is referring directly to what we
read in "the book of psalsms" and he's not picking out specific psalms,
just referring to the whole collection
ok, now that we've got that sorted out...
what do we do about psalms like this?
psalm 5, with these instructions: "for the director of music. for flutes."
and this?
psalm 33, human-verse 2: "praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre."
and this?
psalm 54, with these instructions: "for the director of music. with stringed instruments."
and this?
psalm 108, human-verses 1 and 2: "my
heart is steadfast, o God; i will sing and make music with all my
soul. awake, harp and lyre! i will awaken the dawn."
and this?
psalm 149, human-verse 3: "let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp."
and this?
psalm 150, in its perfect, God-inspiried entirety:
praise the Lord.
praise God in his sactuary;
prais him in his mighty heavens.
praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
praise him with tambourine and dancing,
praise him with the strings and flute,
praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
praise the Lord.
what do we do with that?
(and please - none of the typical "oh, that's the old testament and we
don't follow that anymore" bilge. i want real, legitimate,
thought-out answers with scripture to back them up. thanks so
much.)

| let's set up a hypothetical situation:
a teen girl come forward to her church elders
she shares that one of the elders has molested her
a congregational meeting is organized
information about the accused is shared
former member families have been contacted
it turns out that he has been molesting kids for over 20 years
the elders, of course, make counseling available
however, it is decided that charges will not be pressed
yes, of course no church wants that kind of publicity
but what about all the children whose lives are forever changed?
if this were any ordinary joe schmo, there would be no question about it
is it acceptable/appropriate for a church to press charges, particularly against an elder?
